CNN Doomsday Video…

Because You Never Know When The End Will Arrive… After the Break…

CNN Doomsday Video…

In the 1950s, during the Eisenhower administration, a supposed “Doomsday” public service announcement was recorded by the government using then-celebrity Arthur Godfrey to calm America down in the event of the Nuclear Holocaust that everyone was paranoid about. Nuclear War was a real-deal scenario back in the 1950s and 1960s with America going so far as to even assign phantom department roles to prominent private citizens in the event of a government collapse (the so-called “Eisenhower Ten,” named for the ten private citizens who would be called upon to fill critical government roles).

Obviously, everyone kept their nuclear pants on (so to speak) for the next 60+ years and we haven’t had to deal with a nuclear bomb going off since the 1940s. Incidents such as Chernobyl & Fukushima aside, we’ve been fairly fortunate in that our world has been nuclear-radiation reduced for quite a while.

Yet our world and human civilization may be imperiled by any number of horrendous occurrences. Putting aside the snicker-inducing zombie or alien invasion (Because E.T. has nothing better to do with their spare time than to travel halfway across the known galaxy for raw materials that are already in complete and total abundance long before they get to our backdoor), there are many real-world disasters that could very well set us back to the bronze age or earlier. Top amongst the list is pandemic and asteroid strike although mega-volcanic eruption (don’t laugh; Yellowstone National Park is supposedly one gargantuan volcano waiting to emerge and, if it does, the phrase “75 degrees and sunny” will be as science-fiction as “flying cars” and “robot maid”) isn’t far behind and such exotic disasters such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria wait hungrily in the wings.

Against this backdrop, it shouldn’t be overly surprising that more than just the government has prepared for the End Times in their own unique and special way.

In the case of the cable news network, CNN (literally, standing for Cable News Network), they have an one-minute End Times video prepared in the case that they have to go off-the-air for seemingly forever. It’s been hiding in plain sight for ages, with then-CNN founder Ted Turner even talking about it at length early on in CNN’s history. Up until now, though, no one had been able to see if the video had matched the description: A military band playing the tune “Nearer, My God, to Thee” before the video fades to black without lettering or verbal commentary.

After watching the video, there’s a certain creepiness in knowing that this is a final send-off of a major cable channel but, stripped of that significance, it’s no less ominous or foreboding then any other military tune.

We think that we will live forever until we don’t. Because we don’t see the wrinkles forming right as we look at ourselves in the mirror, we get used to the ever-so-slightly aging of our bodies until a photograph from 30 to 40 years ago confirms what we had already suspected: That we age no less or worse than anyone else of our age. Thinking about “The End” always lends itself to be somewhat gloomy and ominous but that shouldn’t mean that we shouldn’t prepare for it. CNN has with a short video.

It does make you wonder, though, what other cable news channels such as MSNBC and Fox News have in store should the mortal hammer fall…
